DE: Marco Kuster ist Produzent und DJ aus Zürich. Seit 2007 ist er zurück von seinem Auslandstudium und hat sich wieder tiefergehend der Musik hingegeben. Seit nun 2009 beschäftigt er sich intensiv mit dem Produzieren und alles was dazu gehört, wie z.B. die nötige Software und das richtige Hardware Equipment, welches damals besorgt werden musste.

Heute produziert Marco seine Tracks auf Reason Record für Mac und seine Beats holt er aus dem Micro Tonic VST raus. Das Mastering gibt er seinen Tracks selber bei, da er das grosse Augenmerk auf das Abmischen legt. Er geht beim ganzen nach Gefühl vor und lässt sich immer wieder durch gute Tracks inspirieren, um mehr und mehr das Gefühl für ne gute Abmische zu bekommen.

Um sein Können zu vertiefen wird auch schon gelegentlich ein Track nachgebaut, was ihm mit Spass noch zusätzliche Übung ins Ganze reinbringt. Aber wenn es ans Eingemachte geht zählt das selber  programmieren der Beats. Wie man so schön sagt, “keine Loops sind die besten Loops”.

Wenn man mit Marco diskutiert, sticht ziemlich stark heraus, dass er, wie ich das nenne, ein Schrauber ist. Das stundenlange Rumschrauben an Synthies bis genau der richtige Ton gefunden ist, es genau so klingt wie es klingen muss damit er zum Beat passt und rund und voll klingt. Rund und voll getreu dem Motto “Reduced to max”. Dabei steht das “alles selber machen” immer im Vordergrund, da Marco sich mit einfach fertig servierten Loops nicht zufrieden gibt.

Seinen Stil definiert er hauptsächlich als Minimal / Techno, welcher gern mit tragenden Flächen und einem guten Schuss Melodie untermalt wird. Durch seine Anfänge im Trance/Goa darf das Ganze auch mal einen psychodelischen Beigeschmack haben.

Neben den 5 – 10 h die er pro Woche für die Musikproduktion hinlegt, ist das DJing kein grosses Hobby, sondern macht ihm reichlich Spass um gelegentlich etwas kleines Aufzulegen. Wie er sagt, wird er den grossen Fokus für die Zukunft aber weiterhin auf die Produktion von elektronischer Musik legen.

Markt-Veröffentlichungen hatte er noch keine, doch auf seiner Soundcloud gibts schon einiges zu hören. Bevor er etwas auf den “Markt” bringt, ist ihm wichtig an seinem Gesamtpaket zu schleifen und seinen Tracks den letzten finalen Schliff zu geben – genau nach seinem Gusto. Ein Kolleg von ihm ist mit einem eigenen Label unterwegs und ggf. lässt sich dort etwas an den Start bringen. Aber früher oder später würde er seine Musik gerne an die Labels Border Community oder Bonzai Records einsenden, da er diese sehr schätzt.

Keinesfalls soll es aber in Richtung Mainstream laufen, da er seinen variablen Stil mit gelegentlichen Einflüssen von Extrawelt, Bonzai und James Holden so weiterziehen will.

Aber genug der langen Rede, etwas Musik von Marco Kuster darf natürlich nicht fehlen…


EN: Marco Kuster is a producer and DJ from Zurich. Since 2007 he has returned from his studies abroad and got into more depth to music. Since 2009 he is now working intensively with the production and everything that goes with it, such as the necessary software and the right hardware equipment, which then had to be worried.

Today, Marco produces his tracks on Reason Record for Mac and his beats he gets out of the Microtonic VST. Mastering is a job he likes to do by himself, but finally he puts the most attention to the mix. He usually goes by feel  and is constantly inspired by good tracks to get more and more the sense of good mixes in his productions.

To strengthen his skills he occasionally have a track rebuilt to get even more practice with fun for the whole. But when it comes to the end, he programs his own beats wihtout questioning, or as we say, “no loops are the best loops.

As I spoke with Marco, it stands out quite strongly that he, as I call it, a “screwdriver”. It doesn’t matter for him to screw around for hours with synths to get the right sound, so he finally can say it sound best with a nicely warm sound. As we speak of nicely warm sound, we come to his motto “Reduced to max. “Do it all by yourself,” is always in the forefront, as Marco isn’t satisfied with finished and served loops.

He mostly defines his style as minimal / techno, which is often accompanied with nicely shaped surfaces and a good dose of melody. Through its beginnings in Trance / Goa the whole may sometimes have a psychedelic approach.

In addition to the 5 – 10 hours per week that he spends with music production, DJing is not a big hobby besides it, but it makes enough fun to occasionally do some small sets for himself. As he says, he surely will put his focus for the future into production of electronic music.

There are no Market releases so far, but you will get a nice idea of his music on his Soundcloud. Before dropping anything in the Market, it’s more important to him to strengthen his overall package and give the last finishing touches – exactly to his liking. A colleague of Marco has its own private label, so there might be a release one day as an overall start. But sooner or later he would send his music to labels like Border Community or Bonzai Records, because he highly appreciates.

Under no circumstances it should lead into the mainstream, because he wants to move forward with his own variable style with occasional influences from Extrawelt, James Holden and Bonzai.
